Ten short films bring the Pierian Centre to life on Sunday 28th March. They are the work of Bristol- and Somerset-based Biggerhouse and their friends – and they explore some over-looked communities in the South West and South Wales. These locally-made films have a vitality and humour very different from the usual fare on our screens! read full story / add a comment

Update on EDO/ITT Decommissioners Case.

Yesterday the Preparatory Hearing relating to the EDO/ITT defendants took place at Hove Crown Court.

Although scheduled for a two day hearing all was done and dusted within the first day.

This hearing, by Judge Kemp, was to determine which arguments in law could be brought by the defence before the court at there trial due to commence on 17th May, 2010.
It was anticipated by the defence that there are two linked issues that required consideration.
i) The circumstances in which a judge may withdraw a defendant’s defence;
ii) Whether the facts relied on by the defendants’ amounts to defences in law.

The points of law up for scrutiny were regarding to:

Criminal Damage Act 1971

Criminal Law Act 1967

The common law defence of necessity. read full story / add a comment

Until about a year ago I lived in Bristol, but now every day I walk through the Plaza de Mayo in Buenos Aires on the way to my Spanish Clases. The plaza is opposite the main government building and is, every single day without fail, home to a protest or two. It is literally home to a group of old veterans of the Falklands/Malvinas war who, like many millions are unemployed with little or no state help. Argentina just does not have the money to pay benefits to everyone who needs them, nor the jobs to fix the problem. Living in Buenos Aires you get used to protests, perhaps desensitised. You also get used to dirty children juggling on the underground for a few coins, entire families going through the rubbish bags outside your house every night, and people sleeping rough all over the city. Argentines learned nearly a decade ago to mistrust banks after they closed their doors, stopping people from withdrawing their own savings. The currency then collapsed, reducing the savings they couldn't get at to a fraction.
