Stop Hinkley writes: Protesters blocked the Hinkley Point main gates for almost an hour this lunch-time as they demonstrated against the premature destruction of up to 435 acres of open land and wildlife habitats before major consents are approved for the two giant reactors proposed by EdF.
A large group of campaigners, together with local residents including children, held banners and placards in front of Hinkley Point, preventing any traffic movements. The Hinkley main gates were forced to shut from 11.45 to 12.45pm and no traffic entered or left during that time. Some of the protestors wore face paint images of sunflowers, the Stop Hinkley logo and anti-nuclear signs. Others dressed as nuclear 'boffins' and with a loudhailer led a march through the ear-marked greenfield site. The 'nuclear boffins' highlighted badger setts which had been cemented over or had been covered with metal grills, beautiful old woodlands and individual trees destined to be bulldozed and they walked down some of the scores of sunken lanes criss-crossing the fields lined by ancient hedgerows brimming with wildlife. | full story | All UK's n-waste coming to Somerset | www.stophinkley.org | Other Related News: Outrage at Licence for 'Dangerous' Hinkley | Hinkley Nuclear Waste Dump Threat | Interfaith Peace Walk Towards a Nuclear Free Future |

Jim Duffy of Stop Hinkley writes:
Campaigners will protest at Hinkley Point on Sunday lunchtime against plans to destroy many acres of open countryside well in advance of major consents being agreed for two proposed nuclear reactors.
The protest is part of an 'Action Weekend' of activities which includes a day of talks and workshops for campaigners and a disco evening. The Saturday workshop includes national speakers Ben Ayliffe from Greenpeace, Neil Crumpton from the Bellona Institute and formerly Friends of the Earth and Professor Chris Busby of Green Audit.

Climate Camp Cymru writes: Climate Camp Cymru near Selar and Nant-Helen opencast coal mines, Glyn-Neath in South Wales was brought to a premature end on Saturday afternoon with a massive police incursion to evict the camp. The camp was expected to last until Tuesday 17th August.
From the outset on Friday there had been a massive police presence. On Saturday a spokesperson said that there were at least 15 riot vans and numerous mounted police in the area around the camp. One activist said they were planning to take direct action against the fossil fuel corporations such as Celtic Energy, who own nearby opencast coal mines Selar and Nant-Helen. (1) “Our economic system is based upon an addiction to fossil fuels and ever increasing consumption to create profit at the expense of people and the environment” said Tim Jones.
