The Rise of DIY Media in the South West

As the latest issue of both Hard Copy and the Bath Bomb hits the streets (and the net), it seems there is a growing wave of DIY media! Bristol Indymedia writes: With exclusive stories and some of the best articles and news from the Bristol Indymedia website, it's the only local newspaper that is free, ad-free and copyright free (all content is under a Creative Commons licence!) Hard Copy is news made by people for people. Issue 2 has exclusive stories on pollution at Cabot Circus and an inside view on the Poles in Bristol – plus much more. We have started distributing Hard Copy, but you can help us build a people-media network across the city; can you spare 5 minutes to deliver issues to your street? Can you ask your local cafe, pub or community centre if they would like some? We welcome help with distributing issue 2 of Hard Copy...Full article.

Other media activity includes Dialect radio, news on the Women in Bristol monitoring the media and a Bristol Indymedia Volunteers Chat (20th October 6-7pm, at the Folk House, 40a Park Street, Bristol). We have also seen bloggers posting interesting articles to the site including recent contributions from; onthelevelblog.com (article), noborderswales.wordpress.com (article), eveningpostwatch.wordpress.com (article) & peoplebeforeprofit.wordpress.com (article)

As the Credit Crunch Impacts the Region Voices are Raised in Protest, Dissent and in Search of Alternatives

The Financial Meltdown has arrived in the South West as Bristol Evening Post Watch observes: Just one week after the Post greeted the opening of Carboot Circus with the most ridiculous and uncritical hype they are today reporting the first closure of one of the luxury stores as the economic crisis begins to bite the retail sector. Full article.

While PeopleBeforeProfit calls for protests: Nobody needs to be told that we are in the middle of a global economic crisis of vast proportions. We are facing a global recession. The neoliberal ideology that has dominated for so long is in tatters as free market warriors carry out the biggest nationalisations in history. For millions of people the downward spirals on the stock exchange will play out in low wages, job losses and house repossessions...Protest "We won't bail out the bankers". Friday 10 October, 4pm - 6pm Outsite Bradford and Bingley, Colston St, Bristol City Centre (near fountains) Bring whistles, drums, and instuments. (Image: Protest against Wall Street baill-out last week) Full article.

While Parky explores the other options to Capitalism; Capitalism is in crisis and we are not any closer to articulating what an alternative might look like. Here in Bristol we should be talking and thinking about alternative economic systems. If we are heading towards a serious economic crisis then this is the moment when anarchists need to start demonstrating alternative ways of doing things. Full article.

Your chance to help answer the questions: Tuesday 16th September, Cafe Kino, 7pm

BFN writes; Some people feel that women are still being misrepresented, that negative and unrealistic images of women out number positive, real representations by the media. But we have little evidence to draw on....We can assume that, for instance, the Daily Sport will carry far more representations of women in a sexual context than women as mothers, professionals, valued community members etc. We are pretty sure that on an average day we will be confronted with far more images of undressed women than undressed men, but without evidence it is difficult to address this misrepresentation....This is a great opportunity for groups and individuals in Bristol to participate in research which will be used across the country to work towards fair, more equal gender representations....Participants will be investigating the ways in which women are represented in the media. You can choose your own area of research or join a group already investigating a particular issue. We are looking at print media, film, TV, online media, radio... anything! It is a very open brief and you can sign up for as much or as little as you like. First meeting Tuesday 16th September, Cafe Kino, 9 Tree Hill, stokes Croft - 7pm Meeting to learn more and choose a question to research. Full article. People prepare to protest against vivisection in Ledbury...

AnimalAutonomon recently issued a call-out for people to Unite and fight for the animals - 6th Sept - Sequani Labs - Ledbury, Herefordshire UK. In a time when activists are being locked up for organising legal protests conventional activism needs to adapt to continue the fight against animal abusers. Autonomous action will and must be taken to bring the fight to industry exploiting this planet and its inhabitants - enough is enough... (Read more)

And NETCU Watch offered a personal perspective on the upcoming carnival: I have been protesting against Sequani labs for about 10 years now. Often it was a quick demo en route somewhere else or just a couple of us deciding to go there one afternoon. Until 2006 before Staffordshire police (bored after the closure of Darley Oaks farm)advised West Mercia police to eradicate ALL protest there was a fairly innocuous policing presence in Ledbury . In January 2006 Ledbury became a no go zone for ANY protest and in May 2006 operation Tornado was launched scooping up nearly everyone who had been outside the gates of either Sequani or a company associated with them... (Read more)

Lots more information on the history of the protests at Sequani labs can be found in the recent IndyMedia UK feature on the issue, or by visiting the Smash Sequani website.
