"...one of the more bizarre demos in the history of Bath Animal Action..." and more News from Bath

The Bath Bomb Editorial Collective write; Last week saw one of the more bizarre demos in the history of Bath Animal Action, as they took the fight to Bath Racecourse. The cause was well known animal welfare activist Rolf Harris doing a gig after a night of racing at the course, which BAA considered a tad hypocritical bearing in mind the terrible death and injury and whipping rate of race horses. (A one in four chance of a race ending in death at Bath race course, and much higher national statistic, not to mention the fact that only 40% of purpose-bred horses are considered 'good enough' to race. Evidence indicates that many of the 'failures' are shot at the stables or slaughtered for meat). So opposed to animal cruelty is Rolf, that he even wrote a legendary song entitled 'Slaughter on the Ice (shall we do it you and I?)' in which he condones the murder of animal abusers. Don't believe me? You can check it out on the Rolfsters' Myspace! Members of BAA turned up on the night, joined by a two-strong counter demo to encourage Rolf not to do any more race course gigs and let punters know about the cruelty they support. Afterwards, activists headed inside, leafleting over 250 cars and, noticing a stack of pallets by the stage, one scaled the pallets and blasted Rolf's animal rights song at him through an MP3 player rigged to a megaphone, while the crowd were shown disturbing images of horse racing accidents. Security stood by, looking uneasy, and formed a line to try and prevent activists getting on the track (something they had no intention of doing!). Full article.

What is is that they don't want us to see?

Updated! Reader writes; This weeks issue of Schnews, the 14 year old weekly free sheet from Brighton, gives chapter & verse on how Brighton activists subverted the ban on the premiere showing of 'On the verge', the film about local campaign group SmashEDO.

For four years a group of Brighton activists have fought to close down local weapons manufacturer, EDO-MBM, who make parts for bombs used in Iraq and Palestine. A new full-length film has been made about this campaign and yet the authorities seem to want to stop anyone from seeing it. First the authorities tried to stop a screening in Brighton, then in Southhampton and now in Bath. Matt Banning of Bath Activist Network writes; We regret to announce that the advertised screening of Smash EDO's 'On the Verge' documentary about their anti-arms campaign in Brighton, will no longer be shown...Alan Bartlett, head of licensing at B&NES pressured the owner of the Bell public house on Walcot Street to not show the film due to licensing and certification small print, acting on instruction from an undisclosed source...The film is back on! We will be showing it at 7.30 at the friends meeting house, York Street, Bath, come one come all and defy this pretty weak attempt by the cops and beurocrats to stop the film getting shown! Shalom Family Campaign for Social Justice write; Vince Shalom from Wales and three of his five daughters, Rachel, Rebekah and Jessica, (all immorally evicted by Crest Nicholson from their only Family Home at Cardiff Bay in Wales a few years ago), presented guests arriving at the ‘champagne tea event’, with an invitation of their own....Following the Family’s presentation, which undoubtedly had an elegance all of its own, the Family have subsequently written to the Chairman and the North East Somerset Council asking for some help. Serious issues are raised as applied to corporate sponsorship of the Bath & NES Chairman’s nominated Charities, whilst the same council is in dialogue with multimillion pounds redevelopment schemes such as the Crest Nicholson Bath Western Riverside Project...
