87 Ashley Road Eviction Resisted: Police and Bailiffs Fail to Evict Squatters

Updated! As Text Message writes; They've been up there for a week! To draw attention to the continuing roof top occupation of 87 Ashley Road there will be daily demonstrations outside from 4pm-6pm. All welcome. Spread the word. Past updates: Ashley Rd Thursday midday report (Day 2), Friday (Day 3): WE ARE STILL HERE and Saturday (Day 4)

At 10am on the 12th November police and bailiffs attempted to evict the squatters at 87 Ashley Rd, but several residents resisted eviction by occuping the roof. The authorities then smashed up the property to make it uninhabitable. Squatter writes; [those on the roof] seem to be in good spirits, have plenty of people giving them support on the ground . we have our own mobile incident support unit on the scene. no police at the moment, but security with a couple of dogs inside the house. be good if people could be their as early as they can tomorrow morning. Full article. Other articles on this story: why the squatters are resisting, an account of the attempted eviction and writings about housing and squatting.

£400 Million Liquid Natural Gas (LNG) Development "Carbon Dinosaur" About to Open at Langage, Devon

As the International Energy Agency issued a warning stating that; "Current global trends in energy supply and consumption are patently unsustainable — environmentally, economically, and socially..." and the author of Rising Powers, Shrinking Planet: The New Geopolitics of Energy, Michael T. Klare writes; "Fully 45% of the world's remaining [gas] reserves are, however, held by just three countries, Russia, Iran, and Qatar, while large amounts are also held by Algeria, Iraq, Kazakhstan, Saudi Arabia, Turkmenistan, and Venezuela. This means, of course, that we face the same geopolitical problems relying on natural gas as we do with oil." Ignite writes; The latest carbon dinosaur is about to have an opening ceremony maybe next month or early in the new year. It is the Centrica (they were called British Gas PLC) £400 million development at Langage, just off the A38 between Ivybridge and Plympton in Devon. It would be good if people got together to educate and demonstrate the public's anger at yet another carbon monster being opened - The First in Britain for 5 years and the biggest one in Devon or Cornwall for 30+ years. Did £120k-a-year senior officer David Bishop make a 'private arrangement' with multi-millionaire, Merchant Venturer architect, George Ferguson?

Updates from The Bristol Blogger and Green Bristol.

Back in August this year blogger Green Bristol reported that closer inspection of plans for some new houses in Greenbank would intrude onto the Railway Path, despite council documents that suggest this land was not due to be sold off. Then information was uncovered to suggest that the council had been debating the issue but the outcome seems to have been decided in a hurried and secretive manner. After more revelations and bureaucracy, The Bristol Blogger writes; Documents released today by Bristol City Council under Freedom of Information legislation appear to expose corruption in senior officer ranks at the Council House. The documents clearly demonstrate that £120k a year senior officer David Bishop - a “strategic leader” according to wet-behind-the-ears Chief Exec Ormondroyd - made what amounts to a private arrangement with multi-millionaire, Merchant Venturer architect, George Ferguson to sell him a plot of public land on the Bristol and Bath Railway Path at Greenbank. In making this odd decision, Bishop ignored not only democratically created city council policy (the Parks and Green Spaces Strategy) but the advice of his own conservation, parks, leisure, property and transport officers. Mon @ Cube Cinema 3rd November / 8pm / £4/3 nobody refused entry for a lack of funds

Official selection at 11 film festivals including the Montreal World Film Festival, Bristol IndyMedia is proud to present "War Made Easy", the acclaimed documentary by Norman Solomon and narrated by Sean Penn. War Made Easy reaches into the Orwellian memory hole to expose a 50-year pattern of government deception and media spin that has dragged the United States into one war after another from Vietnam to Iraq. The film exhumes remarkable archival footage of official distortion and exaggeration from LBJ to George W. Bush, revealing in stunning detail how the American news media have uncritically disseminated the pro-war messages of successive presidential administrations. The film will be introduced by Robin Brookes, one of the Peace Tax Seven. The Peace Tax Seven are a small group of dedecated UK citizens who are going to the European Court of Human Rights to claim the right for Conscientious Objectors to have the Military part of their taxes diverted to a peace fund.
