Congratulations to Grass-Roots Media Project as it Celebrates 1st Birthday

The Bath Bomb Editorial Collective write; To celebrate our first anniversary, the Bath Bomb has teamed up for an exclusive partnership with the Bristol Evening Post, who are now offering a free Bath Bomb with every issue! Money-grubbing egghead MD Kevin Beatty, of media monopoly Associated Newspapers (proud pro-fascist owners of the Daily Mail, as well as Northcliffe Media - who have been busily buying out every local media outlet they can over the last 5 years and reducing them to the same generic mould) had this to say about the happy union: “…venture capitalism… caviar…tax loopholes…fourth holiday home in the Bahamas…co-opting anything radical and real….” Happy first birthday us! Now, we look eagerly forward to the next year of blandly censoring all opinion, cost cutting, and sacking surplus journos!.... Full article.

Some picks from the Bristol Indymedia website....

nickleberry writes about Free Tibet on College Green; A Mock Olympics was held today on College Green. The aim of the event was to remind people, amidst the hype of the Beijing olympics, of the Chinese government's sordid record when it comes to relations with Tibet, and with its own population.... While camper talks about the recent Climate Camp; For me, whether the camp was a success can only be judged whether we see in the next 12 months an increase in direct action on climate change and social justice in our local area... In related news Emma asks Global Warming - What action can we take?

From the Calender this week: Tuesday Freeskilling brings us Introduction to the Alexander Technique - Practical and Theory, Thursday Anarchy Alive! Author Uri Gordon speaking at Kebele & Bookfair meeting, Saturday UNESCO International Day for Remembrance of the Slave Trade and its Abolition

Indycycle - Bristol Indymedia's free web-based freecycling system!

A large stuffed toy bunny, a CD-R drive, a photovoltaic solar panel, a plug spanner, an old stone sink and much more! Check out Indycycle to see more. Indycycle is a way of people re-cycling things they no longer need to people who may have a user for it. For example if you had an old bike you did not need, rather then throw it out to landfill, why not offer it to somebody else who may need it. Indycycle is a great way of us consuming less resources, stopping things going to landfill and building stronger communities.

All items must be offered for free – no exchanges or cash are allowed. Indycycle allows you to post an item you don't want (or are looking for) to the site along with a description, photo of the item and your postcode. This means users can search for and see items they may want but also how far they need to travel to pick it up.

As Energy Bills Rocket, Tough Questions Are Asked...

As the huge rises in energy bills makes the headlines, Skint writes; This weekend sees the Bristol Harbour Festival, an event organised by Bristol City Council. On the face of it we Bristolians get 3 nights/2 days of free entertainment at a number of locations around the city centre. Much is made of the fact this is the largest ‘free’ city centre festival across the south west, with the accent on ‘free’, and the implication that ‘we’ are getting something for nothing. Oh yeah? But we all know that these days nothing really comes for free, don’t we? The event is sponsored by a number of commercial operations, the most ‘generous’ being EDF, the French owned power company, who pump so much money into it that its now called ‘The EDF Energy Bristol Harbour Festival 2008’. What a kind and caring bunch eh? But then they can afford it, after all in 2007 they made $8.27billion net profit. And to ensure they keep making a profit, they have just announced price rises for gas & electric use to be paid by you, dear reader – 17% for electricity & 22% for gas. So really EDF aren’t paying for the festival at all, we are, through our fuel bills, but we don’t see our names up on the banner headline do we? Full article.
